Newman University Master of Social Work

Newman University offers a program that allows students to earn a Master of Social Work entirely in Colorado Springs.  The Newman MSW program is designed to prepare students for leadership in direct, family-centered social work practice.  Family-centered social workers emphasize the importance of attending to the family’s needs and aspirations, promoting collaborative partnerships, and recognizing and respecting the strengths, skills, and experiences that families bring to the helping process.  Newman University’s Master of Social Work program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

An MSW education from Newman University prepares students for work in the following fields of practice:  gerontology; child welfare; mental health; addictions; school social work; medical social work; and public welfare.  The Newman MSW curriculum provides students with the skills to work with individuals, families, groups and communities.  Students also receive preparation in research methods and grant writing.

Most classes are offered during evening and weekend hours, to accommodate the varied schedules of adult learners.  All are taught in Colorado Springs.

Expert, Accessible Faculty

Social Work students will learn from accessible faculty members who bring many years of education and professional experience to the classroom.  Newman faculty members take an active role in students’ academic and professional growth.  Students cite close collaboration with talented, dedicated faculty as one of their most meaningful experiences.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

The field practicum is an integral part of the MSW program at Newman.  It provides a laboratory for students to demonstrate mastery of social work skills.  Students have an excellent opportunity to find a practicum experience that will be both interesting and rewarding.  Multiple placement opportunities are available, including:  hospitals; schools; community mental health centers; family service agencies; hospice programs; correctional facilities; children’s services; and substance abuse programs.  Social Work practicums are arranged at agencies near students’ homes, including locations in Colorado Springs, Denver, Pueblo, and Canon City.

Value for Your Money

A Newman University education is a powerful investment in your future.  It offers exceptional quality at a reasonable cost.  With Newman’s low student-to-teacher ratio (15:1), you will have more interaction with faculty, leading to higher engagement and better academic outcomes.  Newman’s Financial Aid Office is available to assist graduate students with student loans and other financial aid.  Call 877-639-6268, ext. 2103 for further information.

Licensure

Newman graduates are eligible to pursue licensure as Licensed Social Workers (LSW) and Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW).  Students are eligible to test for the LCSW after two years of supervised post-MSW practice.
